Creating your home to fit your future

Our guide to home design for aging in place

As life gracefully marches on, our homes—those once vibrant hubs of busy family life—have seen their share of changes. From curious toddlers and growing teenagers to giggling grandkids, from full-time careers to working from home and planning for retirement, your beloved home has been there for you through it all.

While your life and priorities have changed over the years, there have been reasons to delay significant home changes or even contemplating the idea of a new home design or remodel.

But guess what?

Now is your time.

Focus on you, your well-being, and your future. It's time to make your home a haven that accommodates you and your future.

About aging & mobility

The term “aging in place” may bring to mind things like wheelchair ramps and handrails. Mobility issues that come with aging seem to be at the top of most people’s minds when they think about how to make their home work for them in the future.

In fact, the mobility issues that can come with age are less likely to require the use of a wheelchair than other mobility aids, such as canes or walkers.

The table above shows a relatively small percentage (6.1%) of all people 65+ will use a wheelchair. Many more of us will use walkers (11.5%) or canes (16.4%).

More about National Health and Aging Trends Study

The 2011 National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS), looked at the prevalence of mobility devices by adults 65 and older. See the charts below for details.

These numbers are helpful to consider as you plan for your home design needs. When someone says they want an “accessible” home, they may think age = wheelchair. But, an accessible home for you is the one that is designed for your actual mobility needs and lifestyle.

The graph above shows a majority of people, even at 85+, do not use any kind of mobility device
