What Does It Mean When A House Has Good Bones?

A white background with a few lines on it.

Have you heard someone describe a house as having “good bones” and wondered what exactly this means? While it can mean different things to different people, to us, good bones means one or more of the following things:

  • The home is structurally sound
  • The interior is arranged in a way that you can work with, or can be rearranged to fit you
  • There’s space to build an addition
  • The home has a lot of light and great views, or there are places where windows can be added to enhance the light and views
  • The home has character--details that really “make” the house

If a house can have good bones, can houses also have “bad bones”? Of course they can, but we don’t really use that term. However, there are some warning signs you should watch out for when looking at a potential new home. Watch the video above to learn more about how to tell if a home has good bones and what red flags you need to pay attention to when looking for your new home.

Did you know that an architect can give you valuable insight to help you decide whether to buy a particular home? When we view homes that our clients are considering, we can help you evaluate the home to see how well it will fit your family, and can provide sketches illustrating the design possibilities the homes have. This insight helps our clients truly understand if a property is worth the initial investment and how much work will need to be done--and how much money will be needed--to transform a home into their dream home.
